The Landlord's Game
Urban Design Concept
The Landlord's Game, the original name of popular game Monopoly, explores how privatization and the Sydney housing crisis cause social isolation among neighbors. This concept aims to transform fences into a means of promoting public engagement. By using demarcation to create a connected pathway and a community calendar/events board, neighbors and locals can participate in planned activities organized by the street community, fostering a sense of community and overcoming isolation.

As part of an urban street life studies program, I embarked on a journey from Sydney, NSW to Phnom Penh, Cambodia to observe and document urban street life. Using onsite sketches and data collection, I analyzed user interactions and behavior patterns in specific built landscapes, with a particular focus on residential fences. Through collaborative research and architectural perspectives, we aimed to develop insights and create a new experience for one of the sites. After presenting our findings, we were given the task of inventing a solution to enhance user interaction with the physical environment at one of the sites. The observation period for each site lasted approximately one week, followed by a four-day timeline for designing the intervention.
